Casestudy: All Aboard for Adventure and Play!
Client: Padstow Parish Council
Budget: £50,000
Age Range: 2 -12 Years
Project Brief
With a budget of £50,000, Padstow Parish Council planned to refurbish an aged play area. Part of the existing space had been closed for 6 months, and many parents felt the lack of adequate facilities for their children.
Having met the play equipment provider Proludic at a SLCC (Society of Local Council Clerks) event, the parish were keen to discuss the possibilities available, to improve their site.
After visiting the council to offer advice and guidance, it was decided that Proludic were the preferred choice to manage the project.
Design Solution
The Play Area designed by Proludic was presented to parents and children at a consultation meeting to ensure all their needs were being catered for. Everyone agreed that the equipment proposed was modern, versatile and exciting.
Complimenting the local history, a nautical theme was created, with key items of play equipment and imagery in the safety surfacing. Brightly coloured graphics feature in the rubber flooring to enhance the play experience and encourage imaginative play; anchors, crabs, and fish.
Play Area
The Tanker Boat multiplay unit forms the centre piece of the scheme. The bright, enticing unit provides climbing, sliding and crawling play activities, above and below deck.
Inclusive play has been provided with the Speed Gyro Roundabout, Dippy the Dolphin Springer and Pod Swing. These items incorporate low platforms, and side supports, to be enjoyed by all children. The items allow for many children of varying ages and abilities to play together, creating true inclusivity.
The Pod Swing and Gyro Spiral provide versatile play. They can be used gently for the more cautious children, or at great speed for the more adventurous and older child.
Outcome
The Site was installed in December 2007 and has received a great response from the residents. A parent commented, “The new park is fantastic. It is far more than we could have hoped for”.
“The Town Council is absolutely delighted with the modern play equipment and very happy that the children were able to choose what they wanted.” (Marian Sedgwick the Town Clerk for Padstow)
